A Fool’s Hope
The wound has barely healed
The mind barely free
The soul just whiffing a glimpse
of that thing the heart yearns.
The dark alley bears witness
As my being crashes back to reality
The conscience asks:
“Where did you go my friend?”
“Why did you leave me all alone?”
Sheepish smiles covered it’s many faces
“I was on a vacation up in cloud nine”.
“Trying to get back the heart that was once mine”
“But it flew away spinning in the unending dark”
“Thus I discovered it was all for naught”
You were right dear conscience,
This burden we carry we can’t escape.
Just so, no one else can relate
This impregnable chasm so deep
Here are my hands for you to keep
Shackle me, hold me close.
And if I ever feel the need to fly away
Don’t let our resolve sway
For this burden
Yes, this burden,
Is ours to embrace forever.
